DeleteYourAccounts.com
Why?
Once upon a time, the internet was a place where you, the user, steered your own journey and found the information and entertainment you were looking for. That wasn’t profitable enough for shareholders, so a new wave of companies came in to ruin things for us.
Social media companies profit off your attention. They don’t care what you see as long as you keep scrolling. Showing you what you like is rarely the most profitable choice, and they're more likely to show you some outrage bait or low effort slop from whoever the obnoxious influencer of the week is. Algorithms decide what you’re shown, and most of the time, that means outrage, noise, thinly veiled advertisements, or not at all veiled advertisements. That’s not you being in control. That’s you being handled.
If you're here, you're probably ready to take some of that control back.
This page will show you how to save your stuff, then delete your accounts. Then you can start using the internet again... instead of being used by it.
Before You Delete
While social media is mainly designed to keep you scrolling, many people joined to stay in touch with friends and family. We know how damaging social media can be, but we get why it’s hard to just walk away.
Before deleting your accounts, think about who you regularly contact on each platform. Do you have other ways to reach them, like phone numbers or email?
Phone numbers are especially useful since you can keep the same number even if you change carriers or devices. Make sure the numbers you have are up to date before deleting your accounts. It’s possible some of your friends have changed numbers and you didn’t notice because you've only been messaging them online.
Sample message to send to friends:
Hey! I’m planning to delete my [Facebook/Instagram/X/TikTok/etc.] account because I want to take back control of my time online. I want to make sure I don’t lose touch, so can you please send me your current phone number so we can stay connected?
You might be surprised how often this leads to your friends saying, “I really should delete my account too.” Most people aren’t happy on these platforms, they just don’t always say it out loud. Feel free to send them to this site if you've found it useful.
